At the Seattle Metro Chamber, we believe transportation is one of the most important things to get right for our community’s long-term health and success. We know the public cares about transportation and wants the system to be safe and work for them, whether they are a small or large business, a parent racing to childcare, or a family enjoying a weekend Mariner’s game.
That is why we are beginning our advocacy work on a possible transportation levy renewal next year. The current Levy to Move Seattle is set to expire next year and makes up 30% of Seattle Department of Transportation’s budget. As work to develop a transportation funding plan gets underway, we’re advocating for:
- Investments in safety, maintenance and preservation of roads and bridges, and ensuring freight and transit can get around our city reliably.
- Specific outcomes so we are meaningfully making progress on our priorities.
- Accountability and transparency measures so voters can be confident in how their tax dollars are being spent.
We have convened members to dig into the topic and are participating in meetings with the city and other stakeholders. We’ll also provide regular updates to you and seek input on the critical decisions ahead of us.
Our work is beginning with reviewing the draft Seattle Transportation Plan, a 20-year vision for the city. If you want to learn more, but only have a few minutes, there is a five-minute video, plan-at-a-glance, and other options available on the city’s online engagement hub. On the hub, you can also share your priorities and goals for transportation investments. Comments are due by Oct. 23.
