What’s something you wish you had known before you started, or before your chose your current career path?
Finding the right niche. Marketing is a broad field and companies selling a product are vastly different in approach and implementation to marketing professional services. These clients need your expertise in their particular market sector. There have been seismic shifts in how quickly data is disseminated and disruption in how we work post-pandemic, so agility and adaptability are necessary traits to have now.
What’s one piece of advice you have for someone looking to start or grow their business, or join your field?
Get the paperwork started early, especially for state certification with the Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises. There are resources available and I’m glad I asked for help in expediting my application to include federal certifications and saved a little on fees.
My advice if you want to get into marketing for the architecture, engineering and construction industry is to plug into a group such as the Society for Marketing Professional Services and keep building your network. They offer many opportunities to learn and job postings, too. I served as a board member, mentor, and Education Committee Director over the 12 years I’ve been a member of the Seattle Chapter.
How are you/is your business active in your community?
I am deeply committed to supporting small businesses. In November I became a member of Tabor 100, an economic HUB that finances the Black Business Equity Fund. They have a great training and networking facility and I have been to several events with colleagues and clients.
For the last three years, I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering with Jubilee Reach, mostly by helping K-12 schools in Bellevue prepare classrooms. It’s been a teamwork tradition for me and my teen during the summer.
