Many businesses are struggling to survive due to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, Nationwide data shows that of businesses closed at least temporarily, approximately 60% will remain closed permanently and a New York Federal Reserve study found that Black-owned businesses have closed at nearly twice the rate of other businesses due to COVID-19. We see this playing out in our region as well. The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) reported in October that over 130 street-level businesses had permanently closed in downtown Seattle alone. With explosive growth in daily coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and new restrictions, businesses are suffering, but, together, we can make a difference by shopping at small, local, and diverse businesses this holiday season.
