About the Book

Lean ImpactTechnology solutions for even our most mundane needs are proliferating fast, while progress remains unacceptably slow for some of the world’s most pressing social issues, from poverty to the environment. There must be a way to close this gap by applying the same innovation practices from Silicon Valley, which have been proven to
work.
Lean methodologies helped companies build successful products and services under conditions of extreme uncertainty. Lean Impact adapts this approach to innovating for purpose rather than profits. The book’s insights are drawn from Chang’s decades of experience innovating at tech companies, and with nonprofits and government, including as a Senior Engineering Director at Google, and as Chief Innovation Officer at USAID and Mercy Corps.

In Lean Impact, she introduces three guiding principles for change-makers:
  • Think Big: set audacious goals based on the real need in the world
  • Start Small: run rapid experiments to accelerate the pace of learning
  • Relentlessly Seek Impact: fall in love with the problem (not your solution) and follow the data.
